Lesson 2

Warm-Up

Now let's practice the foreshortening you learned in Lesson #1.

Please complete these foreshortened circles:

Foreshortened circle exercise

Key Word: Shading

Now you're ready for a lesson on shading . This is a fun one!  You can take just about any flat drawing - add shading , and presto . . . it appears three dimensional!

Plain Circle

Take a look at this ball.  It looks flat, like a plain circle.

Now let's bring in shading and see what happens.  We shaded the left side, because the light is coming from the right.  If the light was coming from the left side, you would shade the right side.  When you add shading to your pictures, you MUST be consistent.

Shaded Circle

When you shade round objects, blend the shading from very dark to very light.  This blended shading helps give your object the rounded look.

Cool Candle with Shading

Step 1

Draw two dots along an imaginary horizontal line that is parallel to the top of your paper.  Then draw the foreshortened circle as in Steps 1 through 3 in Lesson 1.
Step 1

Step 2

Now, draw two straight vertical lines of equal distance.
Step 2

Step 3

Draw a curved bottom as in Step 5 of the previous lesson.   Then draw two dots that are an equal distance from the bottom of the vertical lines you drew in Step #1.
Step 3

Step 4

Draw another set of curved lines for a foreshortened circle but note that there is a break in the lines you are drawing because the top candle can't be seen behind the base of the candle you are now creating.  You should draw the dots first as guides.
Step 4

Step 5

From both sides of the larger foreshortened circle, draw two vertical lines for the sides of the next level of the candle (the base).
Step 5

Step 6

As in Step 6 of the previous drawing, we need a reference point for our drawing so we draw horizontal lines as shown.
Step 6

Step 7

Now for the final touch - adding shading and extras.  Remember that our light source is from the right of the drawing, so the shadow will be on the left side of the candle.
Step 7
